The new European Data Protection Board – How does it function, what are the challenges?

The GDPR created a new independant european body called the European Data Protection Board (EDPB). What is it? How is it working? What are the challenges it faces after 1 year of existence? We will discuss all those questions together. The EDPB is the successor of the G29 WP as from May 2018. It’s made up of the head of each DPA and of the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) or their representatives. The European Commission takes part in the meetings of the EDPB without voting rights. The EDPB is now at the centre of the new data protection landscape in the EU. It will help ensure that the data protection law is applied consistently across the EU and work to ensure effective cooperation amongst SAs. The EDPB is not only issuing guidelines on the interpretation of core concepts of the GDPR but also has the power to rule by binding decisions on disputes regarding cross-border processing, ensuring therefore a uniform application of EU rules to avoid the same case potentially being dealt with differently across various jurisdictions. This lunchtime event will be chaired by Hielke Hijmans (BPH, VUB) with keynote from Isabelle Vereecken (EDPB).
