Masters in International and European Law: Data Law Option

The Brussels Privacy Hub (BPH), convinced of the importance of high-quality academic education on privacy and data protection law, is proud to support the Data Law Option at the LLM in International and European Law taught at the Brussels School of Governance.

The Data Law Option will allow students to obtain advanced knowledge on privacy and data protection law, but also a broader perspective on data-related policies of the European Union (EU). By following the LLM in International and European Law, students will additionally gain appropriate mastery of international and European law, as well as EU institutions, learning about them at the very heart of Europe.

The LLM in International and European Law is a 60 ECTS Advanced Master’s degree obtained in one academic year (from end September until early July). The Data Law Option can be chosen after a solid set of core courses on EU institutional law and judicial protection, EU external relations law, public international and comparative law, human rights and competition law.

The Data Law option, available as of the 2018-19 academic year, comprises three courses:

• International and European data protection law (Christopher Kuner. As of 2020-2021 academic year, Hielke Hijmans)
• Data policies in the EU
  
• Case study on ‘Global privacy and data protection law' (Joris Van Hoboken)

Academic staff

• Professor Hielke Hijmans is the President of the Litigation Chamber of the Belgian Data Protection Authority and a member of the Executive Board of this authority. He is also a guest professor at the Institute for European Studies at the VUB.

• Professor Joris van Hoboken is Professor of Law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB), appointed to the Chair ‘Fundamental Rights and Digital Transformation’. The Chair is established at the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Law Science Technology & Society (LSTS), with the support of Microsoft. Van Hoboken is also a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Information Law (IViR), Faculty of Law, University of Amsterdam.

• • Professor Christopher Kuner is Brussels Privacy Hub Founder and Co-Director and Professor of law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). He is also an affiliated lecturer in the Faculty of Law of the University of Cambridge, associate professor in the Law Faculty of the University of Copenhagen, and a Visiting Professor in the Department of Law of the London School of Economics and Political Science.

  • Professor Gloria González Fuster is Research Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Co-director of the Law, Science, Technology and Society (LSTS) Research Group, she investigates legal issues related to fundamental rights, privacy, personal data protection and security.
